An Introduction to Standardization

Standardization[1] as currently defined on Wikipedia limits the definition to technical endeavors. The definition can be paraphrased as follows for all aspects of  the business process. Paraphrased: “Standardization is the process of developing an agreed upon set of documents (standards) that establishes uniform specifications, criteria, methods, processes or practices.”[1]

What standardization does is establish a point of reference for all business processes. Standardization when applied properly insures all processes are performed in the same way each and every time they are performed.

A very dire miss conception of standardization is held by many individuals. They believe, wrongly, that standardization is used to take away a persons freedom to innovate. The Japanese have shown this belief is completely incorrect.

Kaizen[1], a method of continuous improvement, has its foundation in standardization. From a standard foundation Kaizen purports to move the process being altered so the modified outcome is more effective and/or more efficient.

The bottom line:

standardization is the base line from which to make all processes more effective and/or more efficient. I.E. MAKE MORE MONEY!!!

Please note the emphases on effectiveness and efficiency. These concepts are extremely important to business. They are so important that the new ISO[1]standards require all processes prove their effectiveness and efficiency. If the process is not effective or efficient they must be modified until they are. The new process standard must be communicated throughout the business entity.

One more point, standardization when used properly is intended to make the business consistently profitable. Standards are important for profit to the sole proprietorship as well as the large corporation.
